Manga Review: Zettai Kareshi (Absolute Boyfriend)

Site: http://www.onemanga.com/Absolute_Boyfriend/

Summary:
Riko Izawa is really a nice girl but in some reason, gets rejected way too many times by good-looking and popular guys. One night she goes online and signs up for a free trial of a mysterious Nightly Lover "figure". The very next day a cute guy is delivered to her door and as she noticed, whatever physical attributes and/or requirements she entered into the site is possessed by the guy. The guy finally woke up and he wants to be her boyfriend! The cute guy happened to be sweet, smart, a great cook and he looks like a million bucks, which is what he's going to cost Riiko if she doesn't return him in the allotted time...

Review:
Another work by Yuu Watase. To those who doesn't know her, Yuu Watase was the mangaka (creator) of the famous Fushigi Yuugi and Ayashi no Ceres. Truth to be told, this manga happened to be one of her bestsellers in Japan and, in my opinion, a great work by Watase. Personally speaking, I can tell that this manga is candy coated, female fantasy themed. I mean, come on! Most young women wants a perfect boyfriend and this guy here is practically made as per the girl’s liking and literally “delivered” to her doorstep. What more can a girl ask? Oh… He’s worth a million bucks by the way…

The storyline's light, fun and I think the manga is appropriate for older teens. As expected of Watase, romance, great-looking guys and girl power all the way! The manga (comics) layout is clean and crisp. Girls, expect a lot of romance and bits of jealousy and confusion added to spice up the work. Bear with Riiko here. She can be quite stupid and indecisive most of the time. I love the way Gazu would think of ways to get Night and Riiko spend time together to um... Consummate.

What touched me the most in this manga is Night's desperate moves to act like a human as possible. Since he is simply a “figure” or “nightly model”, there are situations where he went overboard to protect Riiko. Cute actually. The ending is unlike common anime-romance manga. Personally, the ending, I think, is based on Watase's thinking of "I think I should end this manga in a realistic manner". But really… I'm not too happy with the ending.

Good points are the great art, quick storyline, smart and quick humors. Negative side: I really disliked the way Watase made Riiko in the first few scenes... The totally confused Riiko but then, she was quite cute really.. Note here: Her personality is truly far from Miaka's or Yui's or Ceres'. So, there's no need to compare.

A good mix of sci-fi, romance and drama manga. This work is serialized into a drama series starred by Hayami Mokomichi, Mizushima Hiro and Aibu Saki.
